SUPREME QUALITY
CHR totes are crafted from premium double-wall LDPE and feature polyurethane-injected insulation, providing superior temperature retention and durability. These robust containers are built to withstand demanding environments and maintain high performance over time.
Each tote is designed for convenient handling, compatible with forklifts, pallet jacks, and slinging, ensuring easy accessibility and versatility for transport and storage needs.
With meticulous attention to detail, we have carefully engineered the Live Haul to represent the future of water chilling for fishermen and seafood distributors, ensuring their catch remains alive and fresh during transport. Designed with versatility in mind, the Live Haul is available in both air-cooled and water-cooled models, tailored to meet your specific needs.
VERSATILITY
Cool Haul's Live Haul is available in both air-cooled and water-cooled models, each tailored to meet specific needs. For those primarily operating onboard a fishing vessel, we highly recommend the water-cooled model. This design is airtight to prevent water intrusion into the condensing unit while leveraging the surrounding water to efficiently dissipate heat from the water being cooled in the Live Haul tote.
The air-cooled model of Cool Haul's Live Haul is ideal for those seeking an efficient and convenient way to transport live catch on the road. Whether you are moving your haul from boat to distributor, or preserving your catch from a weekend on the water to share with friends and family at home, Cool Haul's Live Haul ensures your catch remains fresh and cool throughout the journey.
PLATE CHILLER TECHNOLOGY
The live haul plate evaporator is engineered from extruded aluminum, built to robust schedule 80 specifications, and weighs over 5.5 pounds per square foot—ensuring durability and long-lasting performance.
Designed with an open layout, this heavy-duty evaporator is exceptionally easy to clean, making it ideal for seawater applications where reliability and longevity are essential. Unlike traditional chiller barrel systems, which are prone to blockages, freezing, corrosion, and contamination from trapped particles, the plate evaporator withstands the challenging conditions associated with seafood processing environments.
Equipped with replaceable zincs and connected via stainless steel tubing instead of copper, this evaporator enhances system life and resilience. Unlike chiller barrel systems that require constant water flow to prevent ice buildup, this plate evaporator operates smoothly and reliably, even under fluctuating conditions—making it a superior choice for dependable, uninterrupted performance.
ROTARY COMPRESSION TECHNOLOGY
The live haul system is powered by a robust Tecumseh rotary compressor, ideal for use in both on-road and marine refrigerated totes. This compressor stands out for its resilience, designed to withstand the impact of rough roads and the pounding of open seas.
Unlike standard reciprocating hermetic compressors—which are prone to internal spring damage, connection failures, or crankshaft issues under such harsh conditions—the rotary compressor offers superior durability and reliability. It also provides easier start-up than reciprocating compressors, and with our integrated decompression system, soft-start feature, and 12V DC control, this heavy-duty chiller system can operate seamlessly on a 2200W Honda inverter generator.
Built to perform under demanding conditions, the Tecumseh rotary compressor ensures consistent cooling power and dependable performance, whether on the road or at sea.
MOBILE POWER SUPPLY
The Live Haul system operates on any 115V/15A circuit, provided it can supply a minimum startup current of 25A. For optimal performance, we recommend using a Honda 2200W generator, as we cannot guarantee the reliability of other 2200W models for this application.
For additional power needs—such as supporting an air stone aeration system—Honda’s 3200W inverter suitcase generator is a suitable option.
If you’re looking to power two Live Haul units, simply parallel two 2200W Honda generators with the Honda 2200i Companion. This setup offers ample starting power, increased load capacity, and improved efficiency.
Alternatively, the Live Haul can run on a boat's inverter system, but it requires a high-quality 4000W inverter, a substantial battery bank, and an alternator capable of outputting 100A-120A continuously. (Note: Most 100A alternators provide full output at an alternator speed of 3600 RPM.)
With these power solutions, the Live Haul ensures reliable performance across a range of demanding environments.
DIGITAL THERMOSTAT
The Live Haul is equipped with a state of the art digital thermostat to customize your cooling needs - easily adjust your setpoint with the click of a button and rely on the advanced abilities of this thermostat to regulate your cooler to your desired temperature.
ADVANCED WATER CIRCULATION
Every live haul unit is equipped with a Rule 1800 pump, ensuring efficient water circulation. For added convenience, an on/off switch is integrated directly on the refrigeration unit.
While the plate evaporator can chill water through conduction alone, the pump enhances performance by circulating water around the plate, effectively preventing icing at lower temperatures. This circulation method is also ideal for aerating and spraying cold water onto products like live prawns in cages, an efficient cooling approach when minimal water is desired to reduce overall weight.
For fully submerged products, the pump provides a steady flow of chilled water to the top of the tote. When additional aeration is required, an optional air pump and air stone system can be added to enhance oxygenation.
In certain applications, such as pre-chilling tuna before freezing, many tuna fishermen find the pump unnecessary—natural movement from the fish in the tote provides sufficient water flow to prevent the plate evaporator from icing up. This versatility makes the live haul unit adaptable to a variety of cooling needs and environments.
WHAT SIZE OF TOTE DO I NEED?
All Live Haul totes share the same length, width, and refrigeration capacity, leaving height as the primary consideration for different applications.
High totes offer the largest capacity, though accessing the bottom can be challenging without entering the tote. For ease of retrieval, a drop-in basket is recommended for some products, while nets, gaffs, or prawn cages can help manage fish or products that settle at the bottom—or float to the top.
Medium and low totes are ideal for easy access, allowing you to reach over the side to retrieve products. For smaller batches, such as turkeys in a chilling or brine-freezing process, the low tote offers the easiest reach for unloading and cleaning.
For tasks like pre-chilling tuna, fishermen may prefer the medium tote, which combines ample capacity with convenient access to the bottom, enhancing both efficiency and usability.
Our stocking tote is the white high tote - this can be custom ordered in blue. The medium and low totes are available in blue only - orders of 4 or more medium or low totes can be ordered in white.

BRINE IMMERSION FREEZING
Why Brine Immersion Freezing?
Many people underestimate the refrigeration power needed to freeze a thawed turkey from 32°F to a fully frozen state. Here’s a breakdown of the cooling requirements:
- To lower a thawed turkey’s temperature from 33°F to 32°F: Only 1 BTU per pound is needed.
- To change a thawed turkey at 32°F to a frozen state at 32°F: Requires 100 BTUs per pound.
- To drop the temperature of a frozen turkey from 32°F to 31°F: Only 0.5 BTUs per pound is required.
Note: The actual freezing point of a turkey is 27°F. This means the refrigeration load breaks down as follows:
EXHIBIT A:
Freezing 10–20 lb Turkeys Pre-chilled to 34°F, Brine Freezing Down to 10°F
- 200 lbs of turkey:
Above freezing (34°F–27°F): 1,400 BTUs (200 lbs x 1 BTU/lb x 7°F)
Freezing (27°F): 20,000 BTUs (200 lbs x 100 BTU/lb)
Below freezing (27°F–10°F): 2,200 BTUs (200 lbs x 0.5 BTU/lb x 22°F)
- Total BTUs required: 23,600 BTUs
(Note: Freezing alone requires 5.5 times more BTUs than the pre-freezing and post-freezing temperature changes combined.)
EXHIBIT B:
Chilling 75 gallons (640 lbs) of salt brine from 60°F to 5°F in 3.5–4 hours
- After reaching target temperature, the brine can freeze 10 x 20 lb turkeys pre-chilled to 34°F in approximately 3.5–4 hours.
- Daily Capacity: 10 turkeys every 4 hours, or 60 turkeys (1,200 lbs) in 24 hours.
This method rapidly freezes turkeys to the core, making them ready for final cooling in an after-freezer, like our Freeze Haul, which can bring them down to -35°F.
